Bhopal Medical Appeal: Water pots a sign of art doing good

Phillips de Pury & Company hosted a charity auction in conjunction with Tatler magazine and Hamish McAlpine last night to raise awareness and funds for the Bhopal Medical Appeal.

To commemorate the passing of 25 years since the World’s worst-ever industrial disaster, The Bhopal Medical Appeal has invited 25 of the world’s finest contemporary artists to contribute to a high profile exhibition and auction in London on 11th October.

Artists such as Anish Kapoor, Tracey Emin, The Chapman Brothers, Barry Reigate, Gavin Turk and Sir Peter Blake have all decorated a traditional water carrying pot, still used by many people for their daily collection of water. These will be auctioned to raise funds for the Sambhavna Clinic, an award-winning clinic which provides healthcare and support for the Bhopal victims and the surrounding communities and is entirely dependent on donations.

The pots are particularly symbolic as they highlight the ‘hidden’ second disaster of Bhopal’s toxic drinking water which continues to poison tens of thousands of people who have to drink it daily.

FEATURING BHOPAL POTS BY ANISH KAPOOR, ANTONY GORMLEY, BARRY REIGATE, CONRAD SHAWCROSS, GARY HUME, GAVIN TURK, HARLAND MILLER, JASON BROOKS, LANGLANDS, BELL, MARC QUINN, MAT COLLISHAW, MONA HATOUM, PATRICK HUGHES, POLLY MORGAN, SIMON PERITON, SIR PETER BLAKE, STEPHEN WEBSTER, SUBODH GUPTA, THE CHAPMAN BROTHERS, TIM NOBLE, SUE WEBSTER, TRACEY EMIN, YINKA SHONIBARE MBE AND PURE EVIL

Eating the Apple

Ah but then there’s Sunday lunch at Pastis, in NY!  No more Nelly! She the host at Minetta Tavern now which is headed towards the top of my list. Pastis, it’s a little noisy but one of my fav water holes in NYC, more so in the summer when you can sit outside and watch some of the variety of NY walk by.  Ummm yum tomorrow’s Sunday!

Why Sunday is my favorite day in England

When in NY, Sundays don’t feel like Sundays but in London, there’s Sunday lunch; a leisurely, midday dinner with friends who are ‘chosen family’ w/ laughter and great storytelling, catching up and planning. Today after a long lunch there was a late tea @ Claridge’s, this time with Carlotta, my lovely, 6ft, German, ‘mini me’ with fascinating adventures in Russia to share.  Post, Carlotta’s Saturday night, May 8th, ‘anti-Victory, 2nd World War’ dinner w/ loads of German food (lots of meat!) and yummy homemade pretzels and a late night boogie @ Momo’s just off Regent St.  In London, Sunday’s a day for me to nourish and recharge the batteries.
